Streaks, Badges and Reward Tiers: How Health Apps Keep You Coming Back

Fitness apps borrow ideas from games to keep you engaged. Understanding the design helps you use it for your goals rather than for the app's.

What gamification is

Gamification means adding game design elements to non-game products to increase engagement and motivation. A fitness tracker app with streaks, badges and levels is a familiar example.

The common mechanics

When it helps, and when it does not

A streak can build a habit. It can also push you to exercise when injured or ill, just to keep the number. Decide in advance that rest days are allowed, whatever the app says.

Thresholds are designed to pull you up

Tiered rewards work by making the next level look close. The same design appears in loyalty schemes, shopping apps and gaming sites. A very explicit example, in Traditional Chinese, is a table of daily-stake thresholds and the reward paid at each level on one gaming site (電子回饋分級門檻). Laid out that plainly, the mechanism is obvious: the reward grows with the amount you put in. In a health app the stake is your time and energy, and the same question applies: is the next tier worth what it asks of you?

Use the data, not the confetti

Look at weekly averages and trends. Badges are nice; the trend line is the useful part.
