How Smart Scales Measure: Weight, and Everything Else They Estimate

A smart scale measures one thing directly and estimates several others. Knowing which is which keeps the numbers in perspective.

The direct measurement

A scale measures weight using sensors under the platform. On a decent scale used correctly, this is the most reliable number it shows.

The estimates

Many smart scales also show figures such as body fat. They usually use bioelectrical impedance analysis: a weak electrical current passes through the body, the scale measures impedance and then calculates an estimate using a formula that includes details you enter, such as height and age.

Why the estimates move around

How to use them

Treat body fat and similar figures as trends over weeks, measured the same way each time, not as precise single values.

Read your device's safety instructions before using impedance features. Manufacturers list the situations in which they should not be used.
