Health Data Privacy and Getting Back Into Your Account
Smart health devices store personal data in an account. Protect that account, and know in advance how you would recover it if you lost your phone.
What the app holds
Weight history, heart rate, sleep and location data can be sensitive. Read the privacy settings: what is shared, with whom, and whether you can export or delete it. Sleep tracking and similar features may collect more than you expect.
Protect the account
- Use a unique password and turn on two-step verification if offered.
- Check which other apps you have connected and remove ones you no longer use.
- Keep the email address and phone number on the account up to date.
Plan for a lost phone
The most common reason people lose years of data is a new phone and a forgotten login. Before it happens, note which email or phone number the account uses and where your recovery codes are kept.
Recovery is a sequence
Good help pages separate the different situations: forgotten password, forgotten sign-in number, locked account. A clear example of that structure, from a gaming site and in Traditional Chinese, is a guide that sorts login problems into three cases and gives the order to handle each one (忘記密碼與登入問題處理順序). The same three cases apply to any health app; check how yours handles each before you need it.
Export occasionally
If the app allows it, export your data once in a while. Companies change, and apps are discontinued.
